FAD Students Show There’s Nothing Luxurious About Cruelty

It takes guts to be a trendsetter, and the students from leading fashion academy FAD International have teamed up with PETA Youth to make a bold new compassion statement. After learning that animals are harmed for ingredients or in the process of making certain “luxury” goods, FAD students designed hard-hitting posters that raise awareness of these issues. The FAD Mumbai class took aim at cruel perfume ingredients, including musk and castor oils, which are made from the genitals of musk deer, beavers, muskrats, and civet cats. Luckily, these products can easily be replaced with humane plant-based or synthetic alternatives.

Perfume can also be tested on animals. Refer to PETA’s shopping guide to make sure that you’re shopping cruelty-free.

“We believe in the exclusivity of luxury, but we also believe that other ways and materials can be adopted to produce luxury products rather than taking lives of animals or natural resources”, the class says.

As students from FAD Pune discovered, fining agents that are used to clarify wine sometimes come from animals, including blood and bone marrow, gelatin, chitin (fibre from crustacean shells), fish oil and isinglass (gelatin from fish bladder membranes). Thankfully, winemakers can use cruelty-free fining agents, such as carbon, certain clays, plant casein, silica gel or vegetable plaques to create wines, and an increasing number of winemakers are now actively labelling their wine as vegan in order to help consumers make informed decisions. We’ll toast to that!
