Musician Atul Ahuja Sings the Praises of Animal Sterilisation

Delhi-based musician Atul Ahuja urges fans to sterilise animals in order to control overpopulation.

When jazz, rock, classic rock, Motown, Bollywood and R&B musician Atul Ahuja sings, audiences fall under his melodic spell. But now the rocker is using his voice to convince fans that sterilisation is the only real solution to animal overpopulation.

“Neutering is very important, I think lots of people don’t get it”, the singer/songwriter explains. Sterilised animals live longer, happier lives and are less likely to contract deadly contagious diseases. Spaying eliminates the stress and discomfort that females endure during heat cycles, and neutering makes males far less likely to roam or fight. Both procedures reduce the risk of reproductive cancer. Sterilisation is a routine, inexpensive surgery that makes a big impact – sterilising one female dog can prevent 67,000 births in six years, and sterilising one female cat can prevent 370,000 births in seven years . This means more homes will be available for dogs and cats who have already been born.

India’s streets are full of dogs and cats without loving homes. As these animals look for food and shelter, they often fall victim to diseases, cruel people or careless drivers who crash into them, causing serious injuries. Shelters are unable to house all the animals who need care, and breeders and pet shops worsen the animal-overpopulation crisis: for every puppy purchased from a breeder or pet store, a desi dog loses his or her chance of finding a forever home.
