The leather industry is violent: Cows and buffaloes are sent to their death on trucks that are so crowded the animals’ bones often break or they suffocate. Other cattle are forced to march to the slaughterhouse while handlers break their tails or rub chili pepper and tobacco into their eyes to keep the exhausted animals moving. Slaughterhouse workers typically slit animals’ throats in full view of other terrified animals .
Leather production is also bad for the planet: High levels of lead, cyanide and formaldehyde have been found in groundwater near tanneries, which people drink . In Kanpur, about 400 tanneries dump much of their dangerous waste – including chromium – directly into the sacred Ganga , which is now one of the most polluted rivers in the world .
Wearing leather shoes can be harmful to your child’s health. Studies have shown that even finished leather products – especially those in direct contact with the skin – contain high levels of hexavalent chromium, a strong allergen that can lead to skin problems, including eczema .
The Central Board of Secondary Education has also made moves to eliminate leather from its schools by issuing an advisory for students to wear canvas shoes .
