PETA India Rallied Support for Animals at This Year’s ‘Woofs and Hoofs’
The Bombay Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals’ (BSPCA) annual Woofs and Hoofs Carnival and Fundraiser on 13 January at the Royal Western India Turf Club was a fun-filled evening for the whole family, featuring music, scrumptious food, an agility course, and shopping opportunities. PETA India was there to support the BSPCA’s important work, including adopting community animals, with a crowd-drawing information booth that offered activities and opportunities for kids to learn about animal rights.
At the carnival, loads of kids met and took photos with PETA India’s elephant mascot and learned why it’s wrong to force elephants, horses, camels, dogs, birds, and other animals to perform in circuses. Years of government-authorised and expert inspections of circuses have revealed systemic, widespread abuse: trainers beat animals with weapons and keep them continuously chained or caged without adequate food, water, veterinary care, or hygienic shelter. Children also learned how to be compassionate to animals with PETA India’s vivid colouring sheets.
Visitors to PETA India’s booth had the chance to experience what it’s like to be a caged bird by standing in a real cage. Kids also participated in our bookmark-making station by using their creativity to construct their own animal rights–themed bookmarks. Woofs and Hoofs carnival attendees who came to our booth also signed PETA India’s “Kind Kids” pledge and took home free PETA India stickers, literature, “I Am Kind to Animals” wristbands, and “I Am a Kind Kid” balloons.
