Andhra Pradesh Education Commissioner Urges Schools To Shun Leather Shoes
Following an advisory by the Central Board of Secondary Education, a letter from the Animal Welfare Board of India to the education ministers of all states and union territories, and communication with PETA India, the Commissioner of School Education of Andhra Pradesh issued an advisory urging all schools in the state to make canvas shoes, not leather ones, the uniform requirement for students.
Andhra Pradesh joins several other states and union territories – including Bihar, Chandigarh, Delhi, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, and Telangana – which have recommended that schools use eco-friendly shoes such as those made from canvas instead of leather as part of their school uniforms.
PETA notes that in India, animals used for their skin often sustain broken bones or suffocate as they’re transported to the slaughterhouse. If they survive the trip, their throats are typically cut with blunt knives in full view of other terrified animals. Turning the skins of cows, buffaloes, sheep, and goats into leather also requires massive amounts of toxic chemicals, and run-off from leather tanneries poisons local rivers and streams.

In addition to being better for animals and the environment, canvas shoes are recyclable, can be washed easily, and are sturdy enough to withstand heavy wear and tear from active students.
