Budaun: FIR Registered for Killing a Female Dog and Her Puppy, Following Intervention by PETA India and PFA Badaun
Following the gruesome killing of a community mother dog and her puppy, PETA India and People For Animals (PFA) Badaun, worked with the Ujhani police to ensure that a first information report (FIR) was promptly registered.
The FIR is registered against a juvenile accused under Section 325 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, and Section 11(1)(l) of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960, following a complaint by Mr Vikendra Sharma, PFA Badaun. These provisions make the maiming or killing of any animal a cognisable offence. Section 325 of the BNS, 2023, prescribes a penalty of imprisonment for a term that may extend to five years, a fine, or both.
The hideous incident occurred on 18 February in Mohalla Bazar Kalan, near Bihari Ji Temple, Ujhani, Budaun – 243 639. Reportedly, the accused would regularly bring their companion dog for walks and beat the community dogs in the way. On the day of the incident, the accused reportedly struck a female dog with a stick while she was nursing her puppy, resulting in the death of both the mother and her puppy.
PETA India recommends that perpetrators of animal abuse undergo psychiatric evaluation and receive counselling, as abusing animals indicates a deep psychological disturbance. Research shows that people who commit acts of cruelty to animals are often repeat offenders who move on to hurting other animals, including humans. A study published in Forensic Research & Criminology International Journal stated, “Those who engage in cruelty to animals to animals were [three] times more likely to commit other crimes, including murder, rape, robbery, assault, harassment, threats, and drug/substance abuse.”
