Make a New Year’s Resolution to Help Animals!

Posted on by PETA

It’s time to say, “Out with the old and in with the new” – habits, that is. Whether you’ve been considering going vegan or are curious about cruelty-free clothing, the new year is the perfect time to adopt a resolution that will benefit animals. And the best part is that we’re here to help!

Please consider making one (or more) of the following life-changing resolutions:

1. Help animals in distress. Witnessing cruelty to animals is an upsetting experience, but knowing how to handle the situation properly can save a life and prevent an abuser from harming other victims. Call PETA India’s emergency helpline on (0) 98201 22602 if you need assistance.

2. Adopt a vegan lifestyle for animals, the environment, and your own health.

Each vegan saves nearly 200 animals a year. For motivation, read For a Moment of Taste: How What You Eat Impacts Animals, the Planet and Our Health by Poorva Joshipura. It is the first-ever in-depth exposé of what happens to animals in India for meat, eggs, and dairy. Order it now.

3. Pledge to shop for cruelty-free cosmetics. The Beauty Without Bunnies database makes it easy to find cosmetics and household products that were not tested on animals.

4. Pledge never to wear the skin of another animal. Vulnerable animals are beaten, their throats are slit, or they are electrocuted for their skin. In addition to animal suffering, the production of wool, fur, and leather contributes to climate change and other environmental problems

5. Volunteer to walk the dogs at your nearby animal shelter. Dogs at shelters are usually confined to small areas, so dog walkers play an essential role in ensuring that they get plenty of exercise.

6. Become a colony animal caretaker. Do you improve the lives of local strays by providing them with a daily meal? Make it official by becoming authorised by the Animal Welfare Board of India to be a Colony Animal Caretaker.

7. Provide animals near your home with clean water. Birds and other animals can become severely parched in the heat, so a small bowl of clean drinking water can go a long way towards making the hotter months bearable for them.

8. Have your dog or cat sterilised, and ask every companion-animal guardian you know to do the same. This helps ensure that dogs and cats already waiting for a home have the best chance of finding one.

9. Pledge to adopt your next animal companion. Don’t buy animals from pet stores, breeders or through websites – doing so contributes to the cat and dog overpopulation crisis.

10. Pledge never to support cruel elephant rides.  Elephants used for rides and other performances are routinely beaten into submission and chained when not in use.

  1. Don’t support zoos or animal circuses. By not patronising zoos or animal circuses, you’ll be taking a stand against the mistreatment of animals used by these operations.
