Another way to replace meat at home is by opting for natural substitutes, which can mimic the texture and taste of meat while offering a healthy, cruelty-free alternative.

Jackfruit is a versatile for its fibrous texture that closely resembles meats. Used unripe in recipes, its neutral taste absorbs flavours well and works wonderfully in curries, stir-fries, biriyanis, and even tacos.

Mushrooms, especially varieties like button, portobello, oyster, and shiitake, are another excellent vegan substitute due to their rich, umami flavour and hearty texture. They can mimic the savoury depth of meats, making them ideal for grilling, roasting, or sautéing.

Meanwhile, soy chunks have become a go-to source of plant-based protein. As one cup of soy chunks contains approximately 26 grams of protein and zero fat, they offer a highly nutritious, protein-packed alternative to meat. Soy chunks are commonly used in Indian households for making curries, biryanis, and other flavourful dishes. Their chewy, meaty texture makes them an ideal choice for replacing animal-derived ingredients in recipes.

As PETA India reveals in the video exposé “Glass Walls”, animals raised for meat are treated with immense violence. They’re typically tethered in place or confined to filthy, crowded cages or sheds and denied everything that’s natural and important to them. They’re torn away from their loved ones and often subjected to painful mutilations. During transport to slaughterhouses in severely crowded trucks, many sustain severe injuries such as broken bones or suffocate or die in other ways. In most slaughterhouses, terrified animals’ throats are slit and they’re often dismembered while they’re still conscious – in full view of their companions.

Our free vegan starter kit helps everyone embrace vegan eating, which also reduces the risk of suffering from cancer, heart disease, diabetes, and obesity; helps fight the climate catastrophe by reducing greenhouse gas emissions; and can even prevent future pandemics. COVID-19, SARS, swine flu, and bird flu have all been linked to confining and killing animals for food.
