PETA India Calls On Boss to Pledge to be Animal-Free

Last week, PETA India appealed to actor Salman Khan to leverage his star power to persuade the Big Boss producers to immediately end the use of animals on the show. This appeal followed a public outcry over the programme’s use of a donkey named Max. Now it is reported that Max has been freed from the Bigg Boss house.

PETA India had offered to take Max to a reputable sanctuary to live with other rescued donkeys, and this offer still stands.

In the letter, PETA India Advocacy Associate Shaurya Agrawal writes, “Bigg Boss is light-hearted entertainment, but the use of animals on a show set is no laughing matter. As prey animals, donkeys are naturally nervous. They, and other animals, would find the lights, sounds and clamour that is standard on all show sets confusing and frightening. That a show set is no place for an animal is obvious to viewers who are saddened to see the donkey kept in a small, confined space standing in waste.”

PETA India had also informed Khan that donkeys, like humans, are social animals. Their well-being benefits from being part of a herd. As society has evolved, using animals for entertainment has become widely understood to be cruel, not funny.
