Elephants are naturally social and live in matriarchal herds. They spend their days foraging, playing, bathing, and walking. These empathetic and emotional beings mourn the deaths of their loved ones, revisiting the site where they died long after they’ve passed. Elephants chained in temples usually go without adequate food, water, veterinary care, mental stimulation, free movement, and the company of other elephants. They often suffer from chronic foot problems and arthritis from the endless hours spent chained on hard surfaces. Some elephants develop neurotic and self-harming behaviour, and many die young. Exploiting elephants is part of a world view in which the most trivial of human interests outweighs those of other animals.
